Leaky Diapers?

For the past week or so, I have noticed that Zakiah's diapers have been a little leaky in the morning when she gets up. She is currently using Pampers Swaddlers Size 1-2. Is this the beginning of bed wetting?

It is understandable that her diapers are starting to leak a little because I usually don't change her diaper at night once she is in bed. I usually give her a bath, rub on some desitin cream to protect her buns overnight, and put her in her fresh diaper for the night. She is ideally in bed around 8ish and doesn't get up for good til 8ish in the morning. According to the Baby Whisperer, I have Zakiah on a 12 hour day and 12 hour night cycle. So yes, she is in the same diaper for 12 hours. On top of that, she is still being swaddled so I don't like having to unswaddle her and change her because of the fear that she will be wide awake in the middle of the night and I have to try to put her back to sleep. Currently, she wakes anywhere between 1-5 in the morning to eat and sometimes it can be once a night or twice a night. Most times, I just feed her and she falls asleep at the breast. So I just go ahead and put her back in her bed and go about my business.

I guess it will be easier to change her when she is weaned from the swaddle hopefully by the end of next month. Her grandparents are supposed to bring her crib either this weekend or next. I think I am going to wait til she is in her crib to start weaning because the bassinet is getting a little crampy to wean her now. I tried a few times and all she would do most times was get upset because she can't stretch out her arms without touching the sides of the bassinet. But she has fallen asleep twice on her back UNSWADDLED in the bassinet ON HER OWN so I know she is capable of doing so when she gets her crib. For now, we are just going to have to make due.

Anyway, just thought I would mention the era of the leaky diapers has begun...yippee!

  1. I wish I had a suggestion about the leaky diapers. Maybe a message board would have some advice? How did you get Zakiah on such a great sleep schedule? Gemma sleeps from 12 am or so until about 7 and wakes once in between. If I try I can sometimes get her to stay in and out of sleep until 10... I would much rather she go to bed earlier in the evening though. 8 sounds AMAZING!

  2. Yeah, I am not sure what I am going to do. I have heard of double diapering for the night, but I feel like that would be too bulky and uncomfortable. I don't know...guess I will research around.

Girl, the best piece of advice I can say is be consistent. Gemma is at a great age to start getting her on some type of routine/schedule. I would recommend you checking at your local library and see if you can find Tracy Hogg's book, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer.

I read that book back and forth during the last few months of my pregnancy. I was pretty much clueless about how to take care of a baby. The book taught me how much sleep a baby should get during the day versus night, how often a baby should eat depending on her age, how to distinguish between different cries and body signals, and etc. That book is SOOOO amazing!

The routine I follow is EASY...eat, activity time, sleep, and your time (while baby sleeps). This helps provide a balance between time with Zakiah and time for myself. And trust me, the earlier you get Gemma in bed at night, the more time you will have to yourself during the evenings...LOVELY! :)

I can sit here and write and write but go to The Baby Whisperer forums.

There you will find help on how to get your baby started on a routine, breastfeeding advice, solutions to general sleep issues, examples of routine and schedules mothers use, and so much more!

It all takes patience also. Gemma is still adjusting to this crazy world. She is dependent on you to help guide her because she doesn't know any better now. I would say the same about Zakiah now, but I think she is becoming wise about some things and is slowly trying to manipulate...lol.

    Hope this helps! :)

  3. My name is Pattie and I work for Pampers in Consumer Care. Even though my girls are older now, you have me anxious to check out The Baby Whisperer! I'm always looking for good books to suggest/buy for new moms.

As for the leaking, my best recommendation is to put Zakiah in a size 2 (or even 3) Pampers Swaddler at night. Since the Swaddlers fasteners can overlap, you'll still being able to get a comfortable, snug fit on her. The extra absorbency in the next size should do the trick of keeping her dry overnight. If you try this, let me know how it works out! Thanks.

  4. Hi Pattie! Pretty cool that someone who works for Pampers comes by my blog and offers a suggestion. God sure does put the right people together at the right time.

I never thought about bumping Zakiah up to size 2 for overnight coverage. I guess I was trying to use up all her size 1-2 before she outgrows them. But I will take your advice tonight and see how it goes. I will make a post about the turnout tomorrow. Definitely come back to check it out!

You definitely have to check out the Baby Whisperer! I rave about that book so much to whoever is willing to listen. It teaches mothers how to listen to their babies and not just assume this or that. I am able to read Zakiah so much better, and she is definitely a happy baby because of it. :)

    Thanks again Pattie!
